Bowes Museum

The museum exterior

Today, the class had a trip to the beautiful Bowes museum in Barnard Castle, a Georgian manor house that was very impressive in terms of size and architecture. It was a very interesting day, where we had the ability to look at many assorted pieces of old artwork, dating from the 1600's to the 1900's. There is also a silver swan, that was one of the first mechanical 'automatons' to be developed, (image below).

The museum also contained gorgeous clothes from several different eras, outfits such as old corsets, dresses and military outfits. The museum also contained a stunning exhibit featuring silverware, and old pocket watches. This was one of my favourite parts of the museum.

We also had a talk with children's book illustrator, Helen Stephens, who discussed her experiences with the publishing industry, as well as showcasing some of the things she has created for publishers. You can find my separate blog detailing the Helen Stephens talk here.

Overall a very interesting day, and also a day where I learnt a lot about Georgian history, architecture, clothing, and art styles.
